History

The Literacy Coalition began in 1988 with a Federal Grant obtained through the Indiana State Library. Since that time, the Coalition has been working to reduce illiteracy in Fulton County adults. Currently the program is housed in the Fulton County Public Library located in Rochester, with a program on English as a Second Language operating in the Akron area.

Purpose:

• Training volunteer tutors to teach non or low-level reading adults to read

• Training volunteer tutors to teach English as a Second Language to non or low-level English speaking adults

• Promoting Family Literacy by encouraging parents to read to children

• Providing community service

• Informing the public of the need for adult literacy education

Cost:

• FREE!!

And active students receive a FREE subscription to The Rochester Sentinel.

Hours:

• Students and tutors meet year-round, once or twice weekly, one to two hours per session
