Keith White

Keith WHITE, 44, Rt. 5, Rochester, died Wednesday afternoon after he was buried by corn in a grain bin at Snipes Mobile Feed on Indiana 25 near Talma.

Deputy Coroner Ed WENRICK said White, an employee at Snipes, died of traumatic asphyxiation.  Wenrick pronounced White deat at 3:45 p.m.

Rochester and Mentone firefighters were called about 1:30 p.m. and worked more than two hours to empty the 30-foor bin which they said was about three-qurarters full.

They found White’s body about four feet from the bottom of the bin, which holds about 50,000 bushels of corn.

Firefighters said White was in the bin alone trying to dislodge corn.  When co-workers could not find him elsewhere, they feared he was trapped in the bin.

For a while, his fellow employees had hoped that Whie had left the plant temporarily, because they did not see his pickup truck.  But they learned later that he had been dropped off at work that day by his wife, Sandy.

About 15 Rochester firefighters and 10 Mentone firefighters cut four holes in the bin and also cut a hole in the door on the side of the structure.

They also used equipment and some manpower from Craig Welding and Manufacturing, McMahan-O’Connor Construction Company and the Rochester Water Department.

Firefighters said that about 50 people shoveled away the corn during the rescue attempt.  A number of the people had been driving by and had stopped to offer help.

Mr. White was born June 17, 1945 in Rochester to Ernest and Mary Alice MILLER WHITE WOLFORD.  He lived all his life in this community.  On June 6, 1964 in Talma he married Sandra K. GREEN, who survives.  He had been employed by Snipes Mobile Feed for
