State Stone
adopted 1971. Limestone is the state stone of Indiana. It is found and quarried in
south and central Indiana from the geologic formation named Salem Limestone. It is known
for its strength, attractive color, durability, and abundant supply. A very workable
stone, it adapts easily to carving and has been used in many famous structures nationwide.
